Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap
Aug 30 2010

And so it began…

Its been 2 weeks of school… The first day of school, I walked into the classroom feeling almost too confident. I had only 4 weeks of teaching under my belt but I felt no reason to worry, no reason to fear, and no reason to think I would be unsuccessful. KIPP Empower Academy opened its doors for the first time on August 16, 2010. On the first day, we hosted 2 of our 4 classrooms and put our extra muscle in both classes to make sure the first day went smooth and smooth it went. The children of the 2 classrooms were calm yet eager to enter their kindergarten class. The next day however, was a bit of a wake up class. The remaining students showed up were not as easy going as their peers. But my staff nor I were worried. We quickly strategized and have been steadily improving student behavior each day.

The last 2 weeks has been a summer school session to get the students conditioned and ready to handle the rigor of a KIPP school. In general, the time went great and the amount of visible improvements in just 2 short weeks are awesome.

Over the next week we will have more training and planning for the school year. Part of me laughs inside when I think about how my kids never  even think about or realize how much work goes into their every minute in the classroom. So now I return to the drawing board and make sure that I am doing my part to push my students to the next level academically as well as helping them build strong character and the ability to “make good choices”.  The feeling of being able to that for someone is more than priceless.

Be Blessed… thanks for reading
